Urban Music Lives On in the Latino Community with New Artists
Messiah El Artista, Karol G, Brytiago, Reykon and Snow Tha Product sit down at Festival People en Español to chat about their careers in urban music, Daddy Yankee and their dream collaborations.
Urban music has been bridging cultural gaps for decades and now Latino artists from different countries are becoming influencers in this genre. Messiah El Artista, Karol G, Brytiago, Reykon and Snow Tha Product joined Alex Sensation at Festival People en Español to talk about their careers in urban music and much more.
Just before reggaeton legend Daddy Yankee received an award honoring his 20 years in music, the five artists were asked about the influence he has had on their careers. “He has showed me that someone can reach that global scale representing the Latinos,” said Snow Tha Product. Brytiago, who was signed under Daddy Yankee's record company El Cartel Records, reminisced about when he was discovered and the tips The Big Boss has shared with him along the way.
Urban music is known for memorable collaborations and all panelists named their dream team including Cultura Profetica, Mana, Shakira and Marc Anthony. Karol G believes that English-language collaborations are not only interesting but positive, referencing Justin Bieber dancing to “Gasolina” on his Purpose tour this year.
As the urban genre continues to grow, Messiah El Artista proclaimed the importance of evolution in music. “Everything evolves. It's a matter of growth. It's a matter of new people coming in with new ideas and not being scared to be different,” he said.
And how about the women in this category? Both Karol G and Snow Tha Product shared some of the difficulties faced by women in urban music and Snow added she is thankful that she didn't have to “sell sex” to do what she loves.
