The ex-fiancée of the late athlete reveals the truth in a touching Instagram post.
After the tragic death of miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez in a boating accident earlier this week, a photo of a pregnant woman he posted in his Instagram feed was widely shared on the Internet. The baseball player had announced he and the woman were expecting a child days before the crash with a touching message on his account.
“I’m so glad you came into my life,’’ Fernandez captioned the photo. “I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst.’’
The woman was initially identified as Carla Mendoza, but Mendoza has broken her silence and revealed that she is not the pictured woman expecting his child.
Mendoza, who according to the Daily Mail was engaged to the star pitcher earlier this year, posted a photo with Fernandez with a caption that addressed her feelings for him and his baby’s mother true identity.
“Not one day will pass by that I don’t think about him or love him,” she wrote. “My heart goes out to Maria, as she is expecting his child.”
Maria Arias reportedly became pregnant just weeks into her relationship with Fernandez, and is expected to deliver their child in February.
Videos surfaced of the baseball player, with Arias by his side, cutting a gender-reveal cake that confirmed they’re having a girl.
A family member of Arias’ told the Daily Mail that he wanted to name the baby Penelope.
