Posing for a school portrait in her native Puerto Rico, López recalls, "Since I was very girly I would always wear a ribbon or something in my hair."

ON HER WAY
Even though she had starred in various TV shows in Puerto Rico and Venezuela, López made her Mexican soap opera debut in 1998 as the villain in Camila, the role that catapulted her career as an actress.

FRIENDS & RIVALS
But the soap opera that truly cemented her as a star was Amigas y Rivales, a coming-of-age tale that would mark the careers of some of its stars: (from left to right) López, Ludwika Paleta, Angélica Vale and Michelle Vieth.

Here, the actress with her then-boyfriend, singer Luis Fonsi, in one of her last public appearances before announcing that she was suffering from breast cancer.

After just a year in treatment, the actress posed exclusively for PEOPLE EN ESPAÑOL in May of 2006; in the interview she revealed, "I want to live, I want to get married, I want to have children, I want to continue working. I am not giving up."

A DREAM COME TRUE
Just three months later, López and Fonsi said their "I dos" in front of their friends and family in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Charytín Goyco said of the event: "It was one of the most beautiful weddings that I have ever seen."

BACK TO WORK
In March of 2007, she returned to the silver screen to star alongside Victor González in the soap opera starring Adriana Fonseca, Bajo las riendas del amor.

AFTER THE STORM
Leaving the worst behind her, Adamari gets back to business in México where she is currently filming the soap Alma de hierro. Here she is at the presentation ceremony in Mexico City with costars Angelique Boyer y Alberto Estrella.

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER
The actress poses with her mother for the special Mother's Day issue. Emotions ran high during the shoot as mother and daughter recalled how their respective battles with cancer have only brought them closer together.

Through it all, Adamari's message of hope prevails. She says of her mother, "It's very important for me to share [everyday] with my mom, to have her around still and to enjoy [being with] her".
