Mexican actor Rubén Aguirre, better known as “Profesor Jirafales” from the show Chespirito, and his wife Consuelo de los Reyes Medellín got in a car accident on Dec. 31. while on their way to work in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, in Mexico, reports AP.
The two were driving in an SUV when, supposedly, the brakes failed on them and they ran into the back of a bus that was waiting in line at a toll booth. The crash took place in the city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa. Aguirre, 73, received blows to his arms and the right leg, and his wife, also 73, suffered a fracture in her right leg.
The couple’s daughter, Verónica Aguirre, told Mexican newspaper Reforma that her father had to have a rod implanted into his right leg. She also spoke of her dad’s health and mood. “Obviously, when you’re dealing with a situation like this, it’s understandable that you’re scared or at first really down, but he’s still making jokes,” the actor’s daughter explained. “[For now], he’s very calm. He’s very thankful for your interest in [his health]. Many family members have called him,” she said, adding that her dad is in the company of his eight kids while waiting to be discharged.
Aguirre and his wife will continue to recuperate as they wait to leave the hospital at the end of this week.
