This year’s Tony Awards will have a Latin flavor. With 13 nods, In the Heights, a musical about Latin families living in Washington Heights, NY, leads the list of nominations to the prestigious gala, Broadway’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The creator, composer and star of the play is 28-year-old Puerto Rican {Lin-Manuel Miranda}],nominated to Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Musical and Best Original Score.

In the Heights will compete in the following categories: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance By a Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Performance By a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Other Latin talents that are competing in the same category are Cuban American actors Raúl Esparza, and Boby Cannavale, both 37 years old. Both are nominated to Best Performance By a Featured Actor in a Musical: Esparza for his role in The Homecoming and Cannavale for Mauritius.

Other plays that rank among the most-nominated are:Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, with 11 nods, Sunday in the Park with George, with 9, and August Osage County, Gypsy, and Passing Strange, all with 7.

The 62nd annual Tony Awards ceremony will be held on June 15 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
