The 2016 CrossFit Games will be awarding the nine winners with a Glock pistol.
“The top male athlete, the Top female athlete, and every member of the winning team will receive a Glock pistol.” —announced Dave Castro, Director of the CrossFit Games on social media.
The announcement drew in thousands of negative comments on Instagram and Facebook, with many citing the recent shootings in Orlando, Dallas, and of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling.
“This is infuriating. We’re mourning the loss of our queer brothers and sisters in Orlando, Phil in Minneapolis and Alton in Baton Rouge, and police officers in Dallas…. Don’t be a part of the problem by glorifying weapons and violence,” said one Facebook user.
Some CrossFit fans feel that the gun prize fits in with the creators background. “The creator was a Navy SEAL this isn’t a joke. If you all have such a problem with it, then just stop doing Crossfit,” opposed another.
Castro informed PEOPLE that this is not the first time the organization gave a gun as a prize— they also gave one away during the 2009 CrossFit Games.
