David Hernández is no longer a member of American Idol‘s top 12. The Hispanic contestant – whose past as a nude dancer in a gay club was recently made public – got voted off the FOX reality competition, but he wasn’t a sore loser.
“Honestly, things happen for a reason. I think we all have a plan. This isn’t it for me,” the 24-year-old told hold Ryan Seacrest, after the results of the votes were revealed. Over 29 million viewers participated in the voting.
Hernández was proud to become one of the 12 finalists, as he had overcome a difficult past to get there. Just as he had begun to develop a good reputation on the program, his former boss revealed that the contestant used to work as a stripper at a gay cabaret in Phoenix, Az. “He had the look and the type that people like, so he made pretty good money here,” Dick’s Cabaret manager Gordy Bryan said, adding that Hernández spent three years there, only to leave three months before his San Diego audition for Idol.
Despite his past, Hernández was not kicked out of the competition. Unfortunately, the viewers just weren’t convinced of his talent.
