After many music-free months full of tabloid scandals, Britney Spears attempted a return to pop stardom with a very hard-to-watch performance.

As the opening act for the MTV Video Awards in Las Vegas, the singer, 25, presented her new song “Gimme More,” and did so with as little enthusiasm as possible.

But that wasn’t the biggest issue. The performer looked a little bit heavier and very awkward as she walked the stage to and fro, surrounded by more than a dozen dancers. At one point, she even forgot to open her mouth during part of the song’s playback.

With a distant gaze and a seemingly nervous attitude, Britney looked ready to run off the stage at any moment. And what was perhaps most shocking were the surprised faces of the stars in the audience who apparently couldn’t believe this was the same singer who just years ago had rocked awards shows with unforgettable energy and choreography.

At the end of the performance, which was applauded with the same enthusiasm that Britney gave, comedian Sarah Silverman kicked off the Britney bashing by referencing the singer’s kids as “the most adorable mistakes you will ever see.” The sarcastic Silverman also said, “She is 25 years old and she’s already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind blowing.”
