Legendary actor and singer Antonio Aguilar passed away on Tuesday in a Mexican hospital after fighting a strong pneumonia, which in passing days, brought on renal and lung complications. He was 88.

The news was confirmed by his primary physician, Jaime Arriaga, who oversaw his treatment during the 15 days the singer was hospitalized in an intensive care unit. Dr. Arriaga announced his death yesterday at 11:45 p.m.

The singer, whose hits included “Albur de amor” and “Triste recuerdo”, is survived by his widow, Doña Flor Silvestre, as well as his sons Pepe and Toño Aguilar.

The legendary artist’s agony was slow, with some rays of hope that at times encouraged even the medical staff, but the singer’s body gave out and he passed away silently. In the end, he was completely unconscious due to heavy sedation.

During Don Antonio’s last hours, Luis Mario Santascoy, a close friend of Pepe Aguilar and the director of Televisa Espectáculos, said:”He’s not gone completely. He leaves behind a great legacy, especially the blood [that runs] in his children’s veins. They will have to continue his path.”

Antonio Aguilar, who acted in more than 160 films and recorded more than 170 albums, was surrounded by his family during his last days in the hospital.
